Welcome! And thank you for choosing our practice as your child’s dental home. Since 1975, we have provided comprehensive dental care for thousands of children. We look forward to teaching your child the importance of forming healthy tooth habits that will last a lifetime.
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that all children be seen by their first birthday. Dental problems can begin early, especially if an infant is nursing or bottle fed, and we believe that a thorough prevention program which starts with educating parents is the best way of ensuring healthy teeth. However, it is never too late to start, and we welcome pediatric and adolescent patients of all ages.
We encourage you to get your child excited about their “First Dental Visit”. Reading books, accompanying an older sibling, or simply talking about the fun one has at the dental office can go a long way in allaying any anxiety your child may have. We ask that you refrain from using negative words like “shot”, “needle”, “hurt”, “drill” or “pull”. All of us are highly trained to use words that convey the same meaning, but in child friendly terms.
We suggest you allow your child to come back to the clinical areas alone. Our staff are all highly experienced in helping children overcome anxiety and dental fear. Studies and decades of experience have shown that most children over the age of 3 react more positively when permitted to experience the dental visit on their own. However, if your child is very anxious and wishes for you to accompany them, we ask that you assist us by being a “silent partner” and allow the hygienist or doctor to establish a rapport with them.
For the safety and privacy of all patients, other children who are not being treated should remain in the reception room with a supervising adult.
During the initial visit, we will review your child’s medical and dental history, and discuss all concerns pertaining to your child’s teeth. We may recommend that we take some digital radiographs of your child’s teeth. If your child is ready, we will clean their teeth, remove any calculus, and provide supplemental fluoride treatment. One of our pediatric dentists will perform a thorough examination and review with you any treatment that may be necessary. Should your child be ready for comprehensive orthodontics, Dr. Skoler or Dr. Lin will be more than happy to provide a complimentary orthodontic examination.
We understand that the first visit to the dentist can be both an exciting, and nerve wracking experience (for the parent!). Please take a moment to review some of the brochures, especially our ‘Child Behavior’ brochure which has some talking points to ensuring a successful visit.
For your added convenience, you can also view, download and print our informational brochure, our medical/dental history questionnaire (“New Patient Form), information about dental insurance and our HIPAA form.
If you prefer, please feel free to call our office to schedule a new patient examination, and we will gladly mail you all of our brochures and questionnaires.
We look forward to meeting all of you at our office!
